FEBRUARY 22 MEETING RECAP
President and Officer Updates
  • The president reported on her meeting with CD11 Dist. Dir. Juan Fregoso in Pacific Palisades on Feb 29, alongside Dave Card, Sue Kohl, Julie Silliman, Harlan Hogue and others, as well as Michael Amster who accompanied Juan.
The President said Juan had been a pleasure to host through the Rec Center and Potrero Canyon and that he had been very interested in learning about our community needs and park priorities. She said he noted that the Rec Center bathrooms needed the planned upgrades that CD11 has pledged to set into motion. He also saw the state of our playground (with sandy pit) and acknowledged that the park desperately needed a new playground.  She noted that he is often sympathetic to our issues and asks, but that he has an entire district to preside over and sometimes may forget what he’s seen or acknowledged here. She shared with him the need for cameras in the park and said he understood we were asking for a handful of cameras to be mounted in strategic spots on existing buildings and infrastructure to help us keep eyes on the park in order to help LAPD address issues of vandalism and youth pranks, including fireworks, that have not subsided.
  • Sue Kohl and Dave Card reported that they showed Juan the city road that leads to the Rec Center, which desperately needs repaving. This road serves many parking spaces for the park and has been left unfinished after the improvements of Potrero Canyon, which created 30 new parking spots around the front circle. That pavement is now new and pristine while the city (non-RAP) road remains pockmarked and sub-par, by comparison.
  • The president reported on ongoing talks with RAP for cameras and foot patrols at the park, saying she continues to work toward bringing a full proposal for cameras and foot patrols.
  • The president that she would invite the joint Palisades/Malibu Chamber, which has increased its Palisades activity, members, and board participation to present to PPCC in the months to come after the merger of the two chambers is complete.
  • The president reminded Area Reps that they had received an email from her regarding fiber optic lines replacing land lines in Pacific Palisades and that this was a cause for concern among some. She had spoken to Ham Radio operators in the Palisades and asked them to present their operations to us in a field trip of sorts. This would prepare us for discussion at the board. See opportunity to learn how to operate a Ham Radio, here.
  • The President introduced the Jacobs Engineering and Arellano Associates project Leads for the Potrero Canyon Bridge Project. Attending PPCC to make this introductory presentation in the lead-up to their first formal outreach meeting on March 14th (see details below), were Mat Negrete - Project manager from Jacobs Eng., Jose Beristain - lead engineer from BOE, and Jason Jackson - Project manager from Arellano Associates. See their presentation here.

Board Member  & Rep Updates
  • The At-Large Representative, Chris Spitz, reported that she and others continue to follow up with the County of LA to determine why PPTFH was told not to count the beach and PCH areas of the Palisades for the 2024 Point in Time homeless count. Some fear this may represent an undercount, and while PPTFH leaders and volunteers did count the beach (with the help of trained LAPD officers), as they always have, it remains to be seen if this unofficial count will be included in the final LAHSA numbers to be released by the County.
  • The Area 3 Representative, Haldis Toppel, announced that the Chamber of Commerce will have a Mixer on March 26th from 5-7PM in the Marquez commercial district, and all are invited.
  • The Area 4 representative and PPRA Reps, Karen Ridgley and Courtney Macker  expressed concern about food trucks and their proliferation on small residential streets, as well as the noise they cause. They asked if anything could be done, and the matter was referred to Michael Amster, CD11 Field Deputy for Pacific Palisades.
  • Palisades YMCA Representative, Genevieve Bostic reported on the YMCA Spring Festival at Simon Meadow on March 30th from 9:30 to 1PM as well as sponsorship and fundraising opportunities. Please see here for the Spring Festival, for sponsorship opportunities, and for fundraising help.
